Team wins River City Rodeo Robotics Tournament

Robotic Team Wins Overall Award at the River City Rodeo Robotics Tournament
Congratulations to our RCR robotics team of Castle Anzalone ’18, William Buck ’18, Jonah Burns ’15, Cole Goduto ’18, Luke Johnson ’18, andDan Mathews ’18 who won the River City Rodeo Robotics Tournament on Sunday, September 28, 2014 by bringing home the First Place Team Over All award.

Students competing in the RCR robotics event learned about traditional rodeo events and applied their robotic skills to rodeo type events which included robotic versions of Mutton Bustin’, Bull Riding, Team Roping, and Barrel Racing. Students worked as a team to complete all the events.

The events started with Mutton Bustin’ where two robots (Drivers: Jonah Burns and Castle Anzalone) had to herd the ping pong ball sheep. The driving coordination was superb in pickup and delivery, with our team winning the event by two sheep. The next event was Bull Riding where one robot (Driver: Dan Mathews) acted like the rodeo clown to protect a cowboy from a Sphero bull. The cowboy was protected for the entire time earning a full point score. Next came the Team Roping event where two robots (Drivers: Luke Johnson and Castle Anzalone) had to capture a Sphero calf and hold it for 6 seconds. Even with an electronic failure of one robot, the other robot managed to pin the calf to the stalled robot for a good event time. The last event was the Barrel Racing where one robot (Driver: Cole Goduto) had to follow the cloverleaf 3 barrel course in the shortest time. The driving was flawless for a very low event time.

This was the first introductory tournament of the robotics season. This team will next work to develop a robot to play the VEX Robotics 2014 game called Sky Rise. They will next compete in tournaments in December and January.
